It will save us so much time when people are notified that they've done this

    @Benjamin Arnulf-Oracle @Gabby Rubin-Oracle and others from Analytics Product Mgtmt/Strategy:

I have following question on you: What is exact evaluation process to decide, whether particular Idea will/will not be and when implemented ? I am quite confused to be honest: I will give you example:

This Idea (created quite long time ago - 2021) has very good count of "thumbs up" (24) and there is status "Needs Votes". So apparently no clear view, that it will be even considered for implementation (statuses "Under Oracle review" or "Planned").

On the other hand, there is an Idea : "OAC connector with Starburst (Trino)", which has been created in July 2023 (quite fresh one), has poor 6 "thumbs up" and is already in status "Planned".

Quite disproportion at the first glance… I would like to be assured, that there is transparent and clear process behind idea evaluation and all Ideas are treated in the same way.

    Thanks

    Michal

In addition to the 24 upvotes already present here - in one of my previous comments I included links to a number of ideas users have submitted for this same requirement. Any "votes needed" should be counted from those as well.

  • All, thank you for your feedback.

Product Management is implementing an idea at their discretion based on votes but more importantly based on the product roadmap & strategy.

The current evaluation process is transparent and as below:

    1. Every month, the Idea Lab council composed of Product Strategy and Product Management is reviewing all the ideas submitted. If the new idea is valid, the status change to "Needs Votes". If the new idea is a duplicate the status change to duplicate, if already delivered or in the wrong idea lab, then archived. If the new idea is not valid, then the status change to declined. If we need clarification, then the status is under review.
    2. Every quarter, we review the top ideas in term of votes. If they have a very high number of votes, and not under review, we send them to the Idea Lab Board (GVP Level) for consideration.
    3. An idea might change to "Planned" based on current development, roadmap, strategy and votes.

The status "Needs Votes" has been introduced recently because too many ideas are requested to be implemented without having a high number of votes. In general, an idea needs to be in the top to be pushed to the Idea Lab board, if not considered before at the discretion of the Product Management.

We will create a Knowledge Base article in the website to detail the entire process.

Please ensure to get more votes if you want an idea to be pushed to the Idea Lab Board.

  • Hi @Michal Zima ,

The "Need Votes" status will replace the "Submitted" status. We are not looking for a specific threshold of votes, but we felt that having an idea sitting in Submitted for a long time does not indicate a call to action for the community. We felt (and reviewed other IdeaLabs in the industry) that a status "Need Votes" would be more suitable.

When it comes to which ideas are getting "picked up", there is no recipe here. Roadmap decisions involve multiple inputs, and the ideaLab is one of them. It is extremely helpful for us to understand the level of interest and use cases, but it does not reflect other considerations, such as urgency, cost, resources, etc. The fact that an idea with one vote was delivered ahead of others might have different reasons, such as we were already working on it, low cost, availability of the specific resource in that area, and so on. In your example, there is a team that is responsible for connectivity; adding connectors is very self-contained (assuming there is a driver that we can legally use), so picking up a connectivity idea might be quicker than picking up a BI Server or UI ideas.

If you are looking for transparency, while Ben outlined a process, it only means that we aim to review all ideas. It is impossible to start defending every prioritization decision through the lens of votes. This does not diminish the value of Idealab as an important community channel for us, and my team and I review it multiple times every week.

Specifically on this one, I did not review it when it came. I'll check with the responsible PMs on my team if they reviewed it and what they found out.

    Regards,

    Gabby

@Benjamin Arnulf-Oracle @Gabby Rubin-Oracle Ben/Gabby thanks for explanation - I am fine with that. I agree : having status "Need more votes" better describes situation than "Submitted".

This is listed as planned, is there any indication of where on the roadmap it is planned?

@TonyWo Please review the idea lab rules concerning ETA/Planned status: https://community.oracle.com/products/oracleanalytics/kb/articles/93-idea-labs-rules

  • We are trying to get this done ahead of OAS 2025. We will update you once we make more progress.
